History

Wood Group has enjoyed a long tradition of success, from its early days in the 1900s when the Wood family’s business began. William Wood, Sir Ian Wood’s grandfather, founded Wood & Davidson, a ship repair and marine engineering firm to service the fishing fleet.

In the 1970s oil & gas reserves were discovered in the North Sea and presented an ideal opportunity to translate marine engineering experience into engineering and support services.

Today, in addition to the oil & gas and power generation industries, Wood Group has increased its focus on the environment by establishing the renewable energy services group and expanding its scope of operations within the alternative energy industry.

Designer Apprenticeships

Each year Wood Group PSN recruits trainee designers for their Aberdeen and Glasgow offices. Each trainee completes a three- to four-year in-house development programme, along with the option to complete further education. There are three apprenticeships available:

Trainee Structural Designer

The structural group is responsible for all structures and supports constructed from steel or concrete both on and offshore. The main tasks within the team are to produce 3D models to solve various engineering challenges, in turn to produce 2D drawings to allow fabrication and final installation of our supports and structures.

Trainee Piping Designer

The piping group is responsible for all piping systems and pipe supports, both on and offshore. The main tasks within the team are to produce 3D models to solve various engineering challenges, in turn to produce 2D drawings to allow fabrication and final installation of our pipe spools and pipe support.

Trainee Electrical/Instrument Designer

The electrical and instrument disciplines are closely related, and as such, trainee designers will normally start under the joint discipline of electrical / instrument and will gain a good knowledge of power generation, distribution, safety systems and process plant control. The main tasks within the team are to produce 2D drawings and documentation to allow procurement, fabrication, construction and commissioning.
